The family and I recently attended one of our favorite striper destinations in Charlestown, RI over the Memorial Day weekend. We stay in a little place on Ninigret salt water pond, which is the largest of the nine lagoons, or “salt ponds”, in southern Rhode Island. It is a beautiful place in and of itself, but especially for those who love the water and/or fishing!

While the ocean is just a short ride away, the fishing in the pond itself is usually so good we don’t even bother leaving anymore. Between the channels in the pond and the short trip up the mouth to the ocean inlet, there are more stripers than you can pass up. Sizes range between schoolies in the mid-20s inches, to larger fish in the mid 30s depending on the time of year and tide. Fished from a kayak, this size of fish is a ton of fun with light tackle. Some of the kayak fish from this years trip are below.

While we normally use just top water plugs here, the sandbars also offer a great opportunity for fly fisherman. There are numerous sandbars like the one below which offer the ability to anchor on the bar and fly fish while wading in the waters just off the channel. The kids really love these too.
